This article brings attention to the few brave people who risk their American Dream in order to represent and protect others’ ability to stay in America. Maru Mora-Villalpando is the main immigrant spoken of as a target by ICE because of her protests and interviews with media outlets describing her situation as in hopes of helping others in her same situation. She moved to the United States from Mexico in 1996 with a legal visa, but once her visa expired she decided not to go back. Maru has a squeaky clean criminal record and is a huge Latino rights activist in her community. She could not just give up the life she had already built in America after she was denied another visa but did not consider what she was doing as breaking the law. Unlike others in her situation though, Maru is using her position to aid and inspire others to stand up for the injustices of deportations in this country. Because of her outspoken, public stance on her immigration status, as well as standing up for others in similar positions, ICE has now issued a warrant for her deportation and are actively trying to remove her from the country. Maru and her lawyers are now fighting to not have her deported due to the fact that she is being targeted solely based on political reasons.

This is an article about Juan Gaspar-Garcia, a man with Down syndrome being detained and held in an Immigration facility. He is Guatemalan-born, but moved to the United States to be cared for by his family members once his mother died in Guatemala when he was 14 years old.   ICE officials snatched Mr. Gaspar-Garcia at work on a random raid along with his brother. His sister, and main caregiver, is pleading for his immediate release. She worries and explains that he may not be aware of the situation he is in and may be experiencing a lot of shock and fear. This article is about a couple that has decided to “self-deport” in this dangerous political climate for immigrants in the United States. Khaled Altarkeet and his wife, Heba Alshbaili are uprooting their family’s lives and are moving back to their home country. This is all due to the unequal treatment of immigrants needing visas to operate their lives in this country. Altarkeet and his bought what is now an increasingly popular café near San Jose State about a year ago, but now have been denied a renewal based on bogus claims. Although they have fought the ruling, they cannot control an outcome in their favor. Eventually, they decided to let go of all, sell what they could, donate the rest and go back to their original home country.   Ultimately, Khaled basically stated that he could not and would not stay in a country where he is so unwelcome. Deporting all of these successful immigrant business owners will not be as good of an idea when the over all economy digresses and politician’

Two young, American children’s fates hang in the balance in Indiana as both of their parents are facing deportation. Their mother Erika was brought by her parents to the United States when she was only 5 years old and their father Jesus came illegally as an adolescent in 1988.   Within a week of one another, these parents were detained due to their illegal status. Jesus was taken into custody, while Erika was released and is forced to wear an ankle monitor. This is same type of monitor given to criminals. Before their detainment, Erika and Jesus were musicians and leaders in parishes around their hometown. Their children are unaware of what struggles their parents are facing and continuously wonder about their father’s whereabouts, even though these events will affect their lives forever.
